The good news for British men is that Japanese women think th ey are cute.
Traditional British reserve and good manners are taken as given, but Japanese women also love the fact that men from the UK treat women as their equals and encourage their partners to have independent lives and careers.
Who is the Japanese woman's ideal British man? – probably Hugh Grant. But don’t worry too much if you don’t have film-star good looks, because western features and colouring are popular in themselves.

Chiyo Enoki, 29, lawyer: "I remember seeing the British actor David Niven in a film when I was about 10 and thinking that he was the most marvellous man I had ever seen – tall, handsome and good-looking, and his manner was so charming and respectful. From that day on I have secretly dreamed about a British husband. Thanks to Destina I have met my own David Niven!"
Miyako Iwakura, 38, financial analyst: "The first time I went on a date with a man from the UK I expected him to tell me all about his career, his plans for the future, and what he wanted from life. Eventually he did, but he surprised me by asking me first about my job and what I wanted. I could tell that he was genuinely interested because he asked me lots of questions. He even gave me some good advice about how to correspond with colleagues in London. This was so kind – by the end of the evening I was a little bit in love with him!"
Hiromi Fuse, 33, PA to company MD: "What is it that makes men from the UK special? That’s difficult to answer. They are different from Japanese men, so of course they seem attractive for that fact alone. I think it is the fact that they seem so polite and reserved and yet they have a great sense of fun. My boyfriend from London can seem very serious, but then he pulls a face or makes a joke that makes me laugh. It’s exciting to be with someone who is a bit unpredictable."
Jun Hiraga, 27, photographer: "British men are big and strong, like people from the movies. They have open features with big eyes, which I like very much. They laugh a lot and are affectionate and respectful to women. I like them because they make you feel that you are a special person and that you are their equal."
Seki Takarabe, 35, journalist: "British men have many friends and they laugh with them all the time, even when they are at work. They treat women in the same way as they would their male friends, and make jokes with them and smile a lot. When I first worked with male colleagues in London I could not understand why they always seemed so happy. Then I realised that it was their way of helping the team to be productive and work together well. I soon began to enjoy it and to appreciate that I was always included in the humour. Now I have an English boyfriend through Destina and he is the same, always smiling and laughing. I like it very much."
